Business Research Databases Handout

Use the databases listed below to search for business articles and other types of business information. While these databases provide a good starting point for your research, other databases are also available. To view the complete list of databases, go to the Maag Library Home Page and click on Research Databases on the left side of the screen under Quick Links.

Many articles may be found full-text within the databases, while many others may be found in print in the bound journals on the sixth floor of the library. If you’re having trouble locating the full-text of an article, contact Christine (contact information left). If you cannot find the full text of an article, check Maag Journal Finder for the title of the journal to find out if we have full text access in print or electronically. If not, use the Online Article Request Form to request the article. If the InterLibrary Loan Department can locate the article for you, they will send it to your YSU email as a PDF attachment. This service takes approximately one week.

Authentication to an OhioLINK database requires you to:

  • Select your institution (Youngstown State University) then click on Submit.
  • Enter your last name followed by first name.
  • Enter your YSU ID# (number beginning with “Y” found on your YSU ID or in your portal account).
  • Enter your PASSWORD. **Until you set up a unique one in Your Library Record your YSU ID# is your password**
  • Click on Submit
  • Databases purchased individually by Maag Library require YSU username & password (same as YSU email).

In addition to full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for more than 9,300 journals and a total of 10,900 publications including monographs, reports, conference proceedings, etc.

    An index of the items listed on table of contents pages of over 12,000 journals. This index covers articles, news stories, letters and other items on topics as diverse as business, humanities, medicine, popular culture, sciences, social sciences, and technology. For most items, the database also provides a list of libraries that hold the journal.

    Scholarly business database, providing bibliographic and full text content. BSC provides full text journals in all disciplines of business, including marketing, management, MIS, POM (Production & Operations Management), accounting, finance and economics. Additional full text, nonjournal content includes financial data, books, monographs, major reference works, book digests, conference proceedings, case studies, investment research reports, industry profiles, market research reports, product reviews, country reports, company profiles, SWOT analyses and more.
  • COMMUNICATION & MASS MEDIA COMPLETE / OFF CAMPUS ACCESS / ABOUT COMM & MASS MEDIA
    Incorporates CommSearch (formerly produced by the National Communication Association) and Mass Media Articles Index (formerly produced by Penn State) along with numerous other journals to create a research and reference resource in the communication and mass media fields. CMMC offers cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts for over 300 journals, and selected coverage of over 100 more, for a combined coverage of over 400 titles. Furthermore, this database includes full text for nearly 200 journals. Many major journals have indexing, abstracts, PDFs and searchable citations from their first issues to the present (dating as far back as 1915). CMMC contains a sophisticated controlled vocabulary and comprehensive reference browsing.

    EconLit, the American Economic Association’s electronic database, is the world’s foremost source of references to economic literature. The database contains more than 785,000 records from 1969-present. EconLit covers virtually every area related to economics.
  • ECONOMIA Y NEGOCIOS / OFF CAMPUS ACCESS
    Produced in Peru by ESAN (Escuela de Administracin de Negocios para Graduados), the oldest graduate school of business in the Spanish-speaking world. This database provides citations in Spanish for articles on business and economics from over 200 Spanish and Portuguese-language periodicals published in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, the United States and elsewhere.

    Includes the full text of more than 7000 online research journals covering many subject areas. Most electronic indexes available to the Ohio academic community link from article citations to the full text in the EJC.
  • FRANCIS (International Humanities & Social Sciences) / OFF CAMPUS ACCESS
    Indexes and abstracts international, multilingual, multidisciplinary resources in the humanities and social sciences. Subjects: archaeology; art history; ethnology; French literature; geography; history of science and technology; information science; linguistics; management; philosophy; prehistory; religion; sociology.
  • ISI WEB OF KNOWLEDGE
    Portal to Web of Science, the renowned citation database, and other high quality, diversified scholarly information in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities.
  • JSTOR (Journal Storage) / OFF CAMPUS ACCESS / JSTOR HELP & TRAINING
    JSTOR is a not-for-profit organization with a dual mission to create and maintain a trusted archive of important scholarly journals, and to provide access to these journals as widely as possible. JSTOR offers researchers the ability to retrieve high-resolution, scanned images of journal issues and pages as they were originally designed, printed, and illustrated. The journals archived in JSTOR span many disciplines. JSTOR is not a current issues database. Because of JSTOR’s archival mission, there is a gap, typically from 1 to 5 years, between the most recently published journal issue and the back issues available in JSTOR.

    Provides access to a wide range of news, business, legal, medical, and reference information from nearly 7,000 sources, most of them available in full text.   • MASTERFILE PREMIER (Popular Magazines) / OFF CAMPUS ACCESS / ABOUT MASTERFILE PREMIER
    Provides full text for more than 1,900 general reference, business, consumer health, general science, and multi-cultural periodicals. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for over 2,510 periodicals. The database also contains full text for reference and travel books; biographies; primary source documents; and an image college of photos, maps, and flags.
  • NEWSBANK NEWSFILE COLLECTION Remote Access Not Available
    Contains the electronic editions of record for valuable local, regional, and national U.S. newspapers. Each paper provides unique coverage of local and regional news, including companies, politics, sports, industries, cultural activities, and people in the community. Paid ads are excluded. Also includes the ability to search Ohio Newspapers, National Newspapers, and  America’s News Magazines.
  • NEWSPAPER SOURCE / OFF CAMPUS ACCESS
    Contains selected full text for 245 regional U.S. newspapers, eighteen international newspapers, six newswires, nine newspaper columns, and cover-to-cover full text for The Christian Science Monitor and The Los Angeles Times. This database also contains indexing and abstracts for four national newspapers.
  • OHIO NEWSPAPERS / OFF CAMPUS ACCESS
    Sub-collection of NewsBank’s America’s Newspapers, a collection of full-text newspapers available online. The database includes 5 Ohio newspapers. Content includes local and regional news, including community events, schools, politics, government policies, cultural activities, local companies, state industries, and people in the community. Paid advertisements are excluded.
  • OPPOSING VIEWPOINTS RESOURCE CENTER / OFF CAMPUS ACCESS
    Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center draws on the acclaimed social issues series published by Greenhaven Press, as well as core reference content from other Gale and Macmillan Reference USA sources to provide a complete one-stop source for information on social issues. Access viewpoint articles, topic overviews, statistics, primary documents, links to websites, and full-text magazine and newspaper articles.
  • PAIS INTERNATIONAL / ABOUT PAIS INTERNATIONAL
    Index to the literature of public affairs — current issues and actions which affect the world communities, countries, people, and governments. This database covers important political, economic, and social issues. PAIS concentrates on topics that are or might become the subject of legislation. It contains references to journal articles, books, government documents, statistical directories, grey literature, research reports, conference reports, publications of international agencies, microfiche, Internet material, and more.
  • REGIONAL BUSINESS NEWS / OFF CAMPUS ACCESS / ABOUT REGIONAL BUSINESS NEWS
    Collection of full text newswires that incorporates news information from all over the world. Information provided by these sources covers business, political, economic and other diverse, international news events. In order to maintain the most current collection of news, this database contains the most recent 30 days of information from each of these wire sources.

    Current events database that allows researchers to explore social, political and economic issues, scientific discoveries and other popular topics discussed in today’s classrooms. TOPICsearch contains full text for articles from magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, biographies, book reviews, public opinion polls, EBSCO’s Current Issues database, and government information.

  • DISSERTATION ABSTRACTS (ProQuest Dissertations & Theses) / OFF CAMPUS ACCESS
    Contains more than 2 million entries for doctoral dissertations and master’s theses. The database includes citations for materials ranging from the first U.S. dissertation, accepted in 1861, to those accepted as recently as last semester. Since 1997, new publications have been available electronically, and many publications can be ordered through the system for a fee. The database represents the work of authors from over 1,000 North American graduate schools and European universities.
  • EBSCO EBOOK COLLECTION / OFF CAMPUS ACCESS
    EBSCO eBook Collection (formerly NetLibrary) is a library of electronic books (e-books) on many academic subjects. The collection includes thousands of titles purchased by OhioLINK, plus thousands of public-domain e-books. Users can preview an e-book online, peruse a page, read each page in depth, jump to specific chapters or pages, or use links in the Table of Content or Index to go directly to specific chapters of interest. Every word in every book is searchable. NetLibrary operates on the library check-out model, where readers check out e-books for a specified amount of time.

    Provides information about current and past legislation of the Ohio General Assembly. Updated daily, it has the complete status and full text of bills introduced in the Ohio General Assembly. This database includes rosters of House and Senate members searchable by name or location, and addresses and biographies of the General Assembly members. While the database focuses on Ohio, information about the Federal government is also available.
  • OXFORD SCHOLARSHIP ONLINE / OFF CAMPUS ACCESS
    A cross-searchable library containing the full text of important scholarly books from Oxford University Press. Includes both classic and newly-published works in the humanities and social sciences. Subject collections are available in Economics & Finance, Philosophy, Political Science, and Religion. New books are added regularly. These books are also available at the OhioLINK Electronic Book Center, where they are searchable along with books from other publishers.

    Provides electronic books in computer science, information technology, business, and related fields from O’Reilly, Pearson, and other IT and business publishers.
  • WORLD ALMANAC / OFF CAMPUS ACCESS
    Includes biographies, encyclopedia entries, facts, and statistics. This database incorporates the full text of The World Almanac and Book of Facts, The World Almanac of the U.S.A, The World Almanac of U.S. Politics, The World Almanac for Kids, and the World Almanac Knowledge Source. A single reference source that covers arts and entertainment, information about U.S. cities and states, people in the news, the nations of the world, sports, the environment, vital statistics, science and technology, computers, taxes, economics, national defense, historical anniversaries, and much more.

    More than 1.3 million pages of primary source documents, books, documents, selections fully integrated with the encyclopedia content.     The OCLC union catalog, containing more than 43 million records describing books and other items owned by libraries around the world. Each record contains library holdings. WorldCat covers thousands of subjects and includes records for items as far back as 1000 B.C. Materials covered in the catalog include: books, internet resources, computer data files, computer programs, films, journals, magazines, manuscripts, maps, musical scores, newspapers, slides, sound recordings, and videotapes. WorldCat does not include individual article titles or stories in journals, magazines, newspapers, or book chapters.
  • WORLDCAT DISSERTATIONS & THESES / OFF CAMPUS ACCESS
    Catalog of dissertations, theses and published material based on theses and dissertations. This catalog is created by OCLC member libraries worldwide and includes dissertations, theses, etc. in all subject areas.
