D-Day Remembered

Saturday, June 6 marked the 65th anniversary of the D-Day invasion at Normandy. The ceremony was well done, though I wondered about the absence of Queen Elizabeth. (Is she the only living head of state in the world who actually served in the war effort?)

A lot of blogs are also commemorating the event, and one of my favorite is Shorpy.com. (Warning: click on the link and kiss your afternoon goodbye!) This arresting photo of a group of people reading about the Normandy invasion on the news crawl in Times Square is particularly poignant. None of the books or speeches about D-Day had been written; they had no idea what was going to happen on that beach. Their faces reflect anxiety, hope, determination, prayer, and a certain grim satisfaction.

What do you see?

Update: another shot of a similar Times Square crowd.
